A wonderful start for Jewish children

The Jewish Kindergarten was established in 1981 and has been a safe and wonderful start for many Jewish children ever since. We have two departments (1-3 years old, and 3-6 years old) with place for 36 children total. Our two goals are to strengthen the children’s Jewish identity as well as prepare them for starting Norwegian schools.

We use Norwegian as our common language and follow the National Framework Plan for Kindergartens. We weave Jewish themes in with the content areas that all Norwegian kindergartens follow. Shared experiences and Jewish traditions also have a strong and important presence. Every week we celebrate havdalah in the synagogue, and every Friday we celebrate Shabbat and the children bake their own challah (braided bread) that they bring home. We celebrate decorate the departments for all holidays. All meals are prepared in the kindergarten and are kosher.

Personal and pedagogic

We are a small kindergarten with caring, flexible, and dedicated personnel. We meet children and family according to their own needs and facilitate a safe and enriching kindergarten experience. We have well trained pedagogs, and several are Jewish. The Jewish Community of Oslo (DMT) owns the kindergarten, and the Board of the Jewish Community of Oslo appoints a Board of Directors who are responsible for the kindergarten’s operations.

The Jewish Kindergarten is closed on all Jewish holidays as well as “red days” (public Norwegian holidays), and we close early on Fridays during the winter months because of Shabbat. Otherwise our opening hours are from 7:30 until 16:45. We admit children throughout the year and admittance takes place through the municipal application process.

We would be delighted to welcome you in for a chat. Contact the kindergarten’s leader using the form below if you have questions or would like to arrange a time for a visit.
